Mr. Dan Cristea is a full professor at the Faculty of Computer Science (FII), “Alexandru Ioan Cuza” University of Iași and a principal researcher at the Institute for Computer Science, Iași branch of the Romanian Academy. At FII he teaches artificial intelligence and rule based programming (at the undergraduate level) and computational linguistics (at the master and doctoral levels). The research group in natural language processing lead by prof. Cristea, which brings together people from both institutions as well as linguists, has been mainly involved in computational morphology and lexicography, creation of digital linguistic resources (such as electronic dictionaries and language corpora), workflows for natural language processing, development of technologies for discourse related phenomena (such as incremental discourse parsing, anaphora resolution, machine summarisation, and temporal analysis of texts), etc. In a recent COST project “E-READ: Evolution of Reading in the Age of Digitization”, he contributed to improve scientific understanding of the implications of digitization on reading with the goal to help individuals, disciplines, societies and sectors across Europe to cope optimally with these effects. One of his latest research projects ”MappingBooks – Let’s jump in the book!” created a mobile technology capable to fetch from external sources additional information related to geographical mentions in the text of a book, while also announcing the reader when her/his instanteneous position is in the proximity of such locations, this way creating a more intimate link between the text and the reader.
Professor Cristea is a corresponding member of the Romanian Academy and a full member of the Academy of Technical Sciences of Romania.
